About the event
When thinking about which film melodies are truly unforgettable, many immediately recall Ennio Morricone’s haunting harmonica motif from Once Upon a Time in the West. Yet the legendary composer did not receive his honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement until 2007. Morricone himself did not primarily see himself as a film music composer – it was only one of his artistic facets. Influenced by contemporaries such as Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and John Cage, Ennio Morricone created, far from Hollywood, piano concertos, choral works, and chamber music, among other compositions. This large part of his output received little public attention, something Morricone repeatedly lamented in interviews. Only recently have lesser-known and previously unreleased works from Ennio Morricone’s personal archive in Rome been published.
